Rasta Returns!

The Rastapus has made his way home thru Summer Jam West! Some of you may remember that the Rastapus was a mural submission for the Camp Chase mural – who needs a big band when the Rastapus can play almost all of the instruments at the same time? He didn’t quite make it to the 90’ x 13’ wall, but he sure did make an impression with everyone involved. About a month ago we contacted the artist, Sheryl Lazenby directly, asking for a submission for the community art installation mural sponsored by Jones Lumber + Millwork Company.  A short conversation and a gentle reminder that the Rastapus could make an appearance on this mural, inspired Sheryl to go all out. She incorporated the visuals of the installed murals by Aaron Grover, Danielle Poling, Tiffany Christopher, Brian Marcus, and Roger Williams, then added the two sculptures; “On the Wings of Change” by Rachel Pace and “Hilltop Rising” by Andrew Lundberg.  She not only envisioned all of these beautiful pieces of art as being orchestrated by the Rastapus, but made it come together with vibrant colour and humour.

She tells us, “My intent was not to fully recreate the installed art in the community, but instead to have the flavor of the art that has been installed. My job was to make this very colorful – and this very big, red Rastapus pulls everything together in style. I also wanted to bring the Summer Jam West “Jam Jar” logo into the mix, to acknowledge the hard-working folks at Summer Jam West who’s mission it is to bring art into the community. Who knows, maybe the water tower in Westgate park will get a Jam Jar makeover in the future?”

Sheryl Lazenby is the owner of Smartdog Design and works as an artist full-time. She is a graduate of Miami University in Oxford, Ohio and she LOVES, LOVES, LOVES to work large!

Sheryl’s large-scale imagery has led her to help found the Ohio Chalk Art Guild. In addition to participating as an artist in chalk events, Sheryl has led a street painting/chalk workshop for teens through the Zanesville Museum of Art; and has featured large-scale chalk work during ART CAMP with kids through the PAST Foundation. Last year, Sheryl brought a team of chalk artists to the Summer Jam West festival.

Sheryl is a member of the Ohio Art League, the Worthington Area Art League, the Ohio Pastel Artist League, Central Ohio Plein Air, and is a founding artist of the Ohio Chalk Art Guild.

Sheryl’s work can be found in private and corporate collections.  She shows her work regularly in the greater Columbus area.
